The Plan...

Athletes training for Olympic Distance Triathlons often train 2-3 times the distance they race. Runners who race 5K's often train 3-6 times the distance. Why is it that triatletes training for Ironman rarely approach the distance, much less double it? How about a 17 hour training day is a site developed to follow the progress of a team of athletes completing a study on the effects of such training.

More About Us...

The 2009 17 hour training day crew had great success at Ironman Canada. We are currently developing the 2010 team. Check back in late November for the next installment of "The 17 hour training day" crew.

February Meeting Minutes

Our monthly meeting was last week and everyone is healthy! The journey we have embarked upon has many destinations and the route is uncharted for all of us. There are multitudes of things to learn along the way, things to pick up and incorporate in our lives, and times to slow down and enjoy what we have right now. The journey seems epic at times but when it is put into perspective it is only the beginning. 2011 was talked about and it made me realize there really isn't an end destination. Each of these training events is just another day holding course to our next stop. Realizing that Ironman Canada is only a destination on the journey made me me how much I love what I am doing and that we all seem to be doing these things out of a true love and commitment to ourselves.

Steve feels he is adapting to the stress of long workouts and is able to stack them back to back to back and recover pretty darn well. Sonja is feeling like she has lost a little bit of fitness due to the knee issue, but I am guessing she will be back to adapting to the back to back workouts in no time. Anthony has had family in town and has been putting the training second to family. In the end we won't look at what workout we missed but we will remember the moments we spent with our loved ones. I have been doing really well with the training. Consistency is the biggest storm I weather and I am learning what I have to do to keep the sailing smooth. The four of us feel we are on the right path and that our goals for Ironman Canada are realistic based on what we are seeing in our training.

March holds another jump in activity for us. The workouts planned are long in duration and are starting to be specific to the Canada course. March looks something like this:
  • Group Run approx. 10 miles to recon a course for a brick later in the month
  • Run a 10K in Littleton to test our speed
  • Brick workout-Bike Shadow Mountain loop followed by 10-11 mile run
  • 8000 Meter Time Trial Swim
  • Track practice starts back up on the 10th
  • Thursday evening group runs will start on the 12th

We looked into April a little bit and have some pretty cool things planned for that month as well. So you will have to come back and see what we are up to. One of my goals for doing this distance training was to inspire other people and show that anyone can do anything they set their mind on doing. We hope you will join us for all or some of our long workouts as the friendships and relationships created along the way are what make this journey epic for all of us.

Dr. Stull has seen and treated some of the Practical Coaching team and everyone has great feedback about the treatment they have received. Most recently, Sonja visited the good doc to make sure there was nothing structurally wrong with her knee. If you ever happen to need someone to take a look at an injury we highly recommend Dr. Stull with the Colorado Orthopedic Consultants.
