The Plan...

Athletes training for Olympic Distance Triathlons often train 2-3 times the distance they race. Runners who race 5K's often train 3-6 times the distance. Why is it that triatletes training for Ironman rarely approach the distance, much less double it? How about a 17 hour training day is a site developed to follow the progress of a team of athletes completing a study on the effects of such training.

More About Us...

The 2009 17 hour training day crew had great success at Ironman Canada. We are currently developing the 2010 team. Check back in late November for the next installment of "The 17 hour training day" crew.

We Are Off to the Races!

The 17 hour group has its first triathlon of the season this weekend! Rage in the Sage is Saturday April 18, 2009. Sonja, Anthony, and Steve are doing the long course distance and Andrea is doing the olympic distance and is hoping to qualify for USA Triathlon Age Group Nationals. Training has been great over the winter and the group is excited to get out and race.

After we compete at Rage we are heading over to the Grand Canyon. Our plan is to run rim to rim to rim on Monday, April 20th. Sonja put the expedition together and we had our meeting last night to decide on logistics as well as get the critical information from Sonja. Michelle F, Keith, and Dave N. are joining us for the day. Andrea will start at 1am, Michelle F and Keith will start at 3am, Sonja and Dave N will start at 3:30, and Steve and Anthony will start at 4am. Staggered starts were decided on in hopes of finishing part of the last climb together.

Sonja and Andrea have SPOT tracking devices that allow you to follow along on the journey. If you are interested here are the links to check out:

We are looking forward to posting our first triathlon race report and getting up pictures and stories about the Grand Canyon!

NormaTec at SuperFrog Triathlon California

This past weekend I got the opportunity to head down to the SuperFrog Triathlon in San Diego to help Gilad Jacobs at the NormaTec MVP sponsorship booth. It was a great opportunity to see how the company speaks the product and teaches people about the unit. I met Gilad at the race expo on Saturday morning and we spent the day letting athletes know we were going to be at the finish line offering free 15 minute sessions with the pants post race. It was a successful day meeting people and hearing about their race experiences and letting them know about the NormaTec MVP recovery system. Bjorn Andersson and Jordan Rapp had heard about the system but had never tried it. They both sat in the pants at the expo for about 45 minutes on a low setting. Both liked the experience and were curious to use the pants after the race on Sunday.

Jordan Rapp won the olympic distance race and Bjorn Andresson posted the fastest bike split on the course during his bike portion for his relay team. Chris McDonald, who is sponsored by NormaTec, won the long course race. As soon as they finished racing they all headed straight over to the pants! They sat for about an hour in the pants chatting about their races and what they were up to next. Jordan actually lives in Penticton and said if the 17 hour group needed a hang out place we were more than welcome to come hang out with he and his fiancee. He will be racing Canada Ironman as well this year. About an hour later all of them came back to the pants to have another session! It was pretty cool because after the brief time they spent in the pants they were telling everyone who came over to check out what was going on how great the pants were for recovery and how great they felt. Jordan and Bjorn also spoke of the session the day before and how they felt relaxed and their legs felt ready to race.

The 17 hour training group has been using the pants and arms for about 5 months now and we are finding help with recovery and being able to stack workouts back to back. It was great seeing the response from athletes at a race and being able to share our experiences with others.
